Description

From the metropolis, the 19th century forged a Philippine Parnassus, a visual imaginary that codified the islands. This corpus, conceived in the peninsula, oscillates between ethnographic documentation and the romantic idealization of the tropics. It reflects the tension between the empire's classificatory will and the construction of a Philippine identity viewed from a distance.
