Father Henri Lammens (1862-1937), born in Ghent, Belgium, joined the Jesuits at 15 and settled in Lebanon. He mastered Latin, Greek, and Arabic, teaching Arabic in Beirut. His first work was an Arabic dictionary, 'Farā'id al-lugha'.
