Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), pseudonym of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, was an educator, diplomat, and poet. In 1945, she became the first Latin American author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in Vicuña, Chile, Mistral developed an early interest in poetry and literature.
